Form and Pattern

Colored pencil drawing by Mia Paunovic of a seashell with spiral patterns, featuring warm tones of brown, orange, and yellow on a white background.
This study of a conch shell captures the natural beauty of form and pattern.

Description:

I found myself fascinated by the intricate form and repeating patterns of the shell I collected last summer while we were on vacation. This shell, despite its small size, was incredibly detailed. I chose to focus my drawing on patterns and lines I was able to see. Analyzing all those details allowed me to explore the nuances of its structure and appreciate its natural form. Nature is able to create amazing objects. I also started thinking, “This is the house of a little creature,” before I picked it up on the shore.

Process:

I began this artwork by concentrating on how light and shadow were reflected. There were numerous elements scattered across the curved surfaces and grooves. I was trying to capture all of it with precise lines that formed naturally. I found patterns and repetition in lines and was able to replicate them using colored pencils. I endeavored to capture the warm earthy tones and various color variations using the pencils at my disposal.

The organic shape of the shell was enjoyable to draw. I took a more exploratory approach, allowing the arches to guide me instead of relying solely on technical precision.
