Mini Printmaking Block

Linocut print of a beetle by Mia Paunovic, showing a bold black insect with striped wing casings on a white background.
This image embodies my journey into printmaking, where I aim to capture the essence of details.

Description:

The black-and-white linocut “Beetle” is incredibly simple. I used strong, clear lines to try to show the structure of the piece by drawing attention to its rhythm and balance. I left the fine curves in the lines in a slightly rough format on purpose to bring out the organic quality and tactile aspect of printing.

Process:

This small printmaking block served as a practice in achieving maximum impact through minimalism. When working with only one color, you had to think carefully about where and how heavy each line should be. The carved lines are purposely rough, which gives the print personality and shows off the natural qualities of the linocut medium. In this piece, I looked at how simple shapes can lead to complicated meanings by asking viewers to look at both the details and the empty space around them. The linocut process made me think about how I use positive and negative space, and it let me try out different textures and differences.
