Description:
“Under the Sea” is my big linocut print. In this large format print I show a busy scene beneath. The piece features a shark, pufferfish, and small fish moving among sea plants and coral. The piece uses strong, simple lines and shapes to show how the ocean moves and how the people that live in it connect with each other. The unique technique that I used here is combination of graphic design and computer art with carving technique on a print block. The marine life illustrations came from my photographs that I took while visiting Shedd Aquarium. Composition and proportions are pre-drafted in Adobe Illustrator before I started the drawing process.
Process:
I wanted to explore the strange and bright creatures that reside beneath the ocean through the medium of Linocut. I wanted to explore something new with this composition. I wanted to examine the connections between the sea creatures and their surroundings. Because this print was of a larger size, it provided me room for exploration. Goal was to create a playful and captivating movement that would pique people’s curiosity and inspire them to delve deeper into the world beneath the surface. Because of this project, I had to find new ways to use strong lines and empty space to show character and depth. The resulting piece captures not just the physical form of marine life, but also the mysterious energy and fluid motion that makes the ocean so captivating.
